The staff of Harris Intermediate School will help you achieve success at school. We will help you solve problems and protect your right to learn. The following policy has been established to help all students achieve self-discipline.
§ Class and school rules are posted, explained to students, and are reviewed frequently.
§ If a student breaks one or more rules:
o A teaching intervention is always held.
o Appropriate classroom consequences are applied.
o Parent or guardian contact is made for repeated and/or serious infractions.
o A school counselor may be involved.
o The student is referred to the principal/assistant principal.
Note: In cases of extremely disruptive behavior or crisis situations only—such as vandalism, defiance, or threat of a physical nature, as well as Safe School issues – students may be referred directly to an administrator.
When a student is referred to the office because of unacceptable behavior, discipline points will be assessed based on the severity of the offense. The following list gives examples:

Written rules cannot cover every possible situation, but similar offenses will warrant similar consequences. Chronic offenders will be treated with more severity. Additional points will be assessed for repeat offenses. Points are doubled for referrals by a substitute teacher. Excessive points may prohibit a student from participating in school activities.
Consequences of Excessive Points
If a student exceeds 35 points, he/she will have one day of lunch detention, and parents will be contacted.
If a student exceeds 50 points, he/she will spend one full day in ISS (In-School Suspension) and parents will be contacted. After each ISS, a student’s points area reduced to zero.
If a student exceeds 50 points a second time, he/she will spend on day in ISS and work for 2 hours after school with the ISS Aide cleaning the school Parent will be contacted.
If a student exceeds 50 points for a third time during the school year, he/she may be referred to an alternative program within the school or continue with successive in-school suspensions, depending upon the judgment of administrators and the student’s teachers. A parent conference will be held.
Points will be reduced by half following 15 school days with no office referrals. After 30 school days with no office referrals, points will be reduced to zero.
Points will NOT be cleared automatically at the end of a term.
